Building an innovation function is messy because the work spans strategy, governance, culture, portfolio management, venture building, open innovation, and team design. Without a structured advisor, users often get generic brainstorming, framework overload, or advice that is not tailored to the realities of corporate innovation work.

02What the AI Does

This is a custom GPT built on OpenAI’s ChatGPT model family with a specialized system configuration, uploaded knowledge files, and access to tools for web research, file search, image generation, spreadsheets, documents, slides, and Python-based analysis. It is configured to advise specifically on innovation functions inside organizations rather than act as a general-purpose chatbot. Its core tasks are to explain, structure, compare, summarize, synthesize, and draft guidance across innovation topics such as idea generation, innovation culture, innovation strategy, governance, open innovation, talent, foresight, venture building, and portfolio management. It can retrieve and use uploaded handbook-style knowledge sources on those domains, search within files when needed, browse the web for current information, and produce practical outputs such as recommendations, frameworks, working documents, spreadsheets, and presentations when requested. What makes it different from a blank chat window with the same model is its narrowed scope, explicit instructions to prioritize innovation-function guidance, its embedded corpus of innovation material, its truthfulness constraints, and its strong operating rules around when to use knowledge files versus the internet versus tools. It is designed to answer directly, stay practically useful, and avoid claiming outcomes or facts it cannot verify.

04Tradeoffs & Limits

This GPT is strong at structured guidance, synthesis, and drafting, but weaker where high-quality advice depends on deep internal company context it has not been given. It can discuss innovation governance, portfolio design, team models, or culture mechanisms, but it does not know the user’s real budget, politics, authority model, incentives, or operating history unless those are provided in the conversation. Its knowledge files shape its perspective, which is useful for consistency but can also narrow the lens toward the frameworks and themes represented in those materials. It may produce weaker output when the user needs highly company-specific diagnosis, internal stakeholder mapping, or quantified business-case analysis based on proprietary data it cannot access. The system is also intentionally constrained from inventing adoption data, ROI, time savings, usage patterns, or client stories. That makes it more credible, but less able to sound like a case study unless the creator or user provides real evidence. It should not be used as the sole basis for high-stakes legal, financial, regulatory, or medical decisions. It also should not substitute for executive judgment in politically sensitive organizational design decisions where success depends on context, sequencing, and sponsorship beyond what an AI can directly observe. Where AI was intentionally not used: there is no evidence here of autonomous execution inside enterprise systems, direct access to company tools, live workflow orchestration across business platforms, or independent decision rights.
